What is the Kia PV7?
The Kia PV7 is a large electric vehicle designed primarily for commercial and business use, although Kia will also offer a Passenger version aimed at transporting people.
It sits above the Kia PV5 in the company's new PBV range. Kia's Platform Beyond Vehicle strategy is based around creating electric vehicles that can be adapted for different uses rather than producing a single fixed van configuration.
The PV7 is built on Kia's dedicated E-GMP.S architecture, which has been developed specifically for PBV applications. The platform allows Kia to create different vehicle sizes, body styles and interior configurations while using the same basic electric vehicle architecture.
The new van has a distinctive one-box design with an upright body and a strong focus on making the most of the available interior and cargo space.
Kia has initially revealed two main versions:
PV7 Cargo
PV7 Passenger
The Cargo version is aimed at businesses that need carrying capacity and practical loading access. The Passenger version is designed for transporting people and can be configured for applications such as shuttle services, group transport and other passenger-focused uses.
Kia PV7 range could exceed 280 miles
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the new PV7 is its expected driving range.
Kia says the PV7 Cargo Long Range can achieve more than 460 km on a single charge under European WLTP testing. That works out at roughly 286 miles.
That could make the PV7 particularly interesting for businesses that need to cover longer distances without stopping frequently to recharge.
However, it is important to remember that the quoted figure is based on testing conditions. Real-world range can vary depending on payload, weather, temperature, speed, driving style and the type of journeys being undertaken.
This matters even more with electric vans. Carrying a heavy load can have a noticeable impact on energy consumption, so businesses will want to know how much range the PV7 can deliver when it is being used for its intended purpose.
800V charging could be a major advantage
The PV7 also brings 800V charging technology to Kia's electric van range.
Kia says the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in the mid-20-minute range when using suitable high-power DC charging infrastructure. This could be particularly useful for commercial operators because charging downtime can directly affect a business's productivity.
Kia has also introduced an unusual dual charging-port arrangement. The PV7 has a front charging port supporting AC and DC charging, while an optional rear AC charging port can make it easier to connect the vehicle in different parking and depot situations.

The Cargo version focuses on usable load space, practical access and payload. Kia says the long-wheelbase Cargo can offer up to 6.1 cubic metres of cargo space, while a high-roof version can provide up to 8.0 cubic metres. The long version can accommodate up to three Euro pallets.
Maximum payload is expected to reach 1,165 kg for the long-wheelbase version and 1,200 kg for the shorter version.
These figures could make the PV7 particularly relevant to tradespeople, delivery companies, couriers and businesses that regularly carry equipment or materials.
The vehicle also has a loading height of 550 mm on the long version, while Kia has designed the Cargo model around practical loading and unloading.

V2L could be useful for tradespeople
Another interesting feature of the PV7 is vehicle-to-load technology, commonly known as V2L.

Kia plans a much larger PV7 range
The version shown at IAA Transportation is only the beginning of Kia's PV7 plans.
The company says its Flexible Body System will allow it to create a wide range of derivatives and conversion models. Kia plans to expand the PV7 family to a total of 23 variants and conversion models over time.
That could include different body lengths, roof heights, passenger configurations and specialist commercial versions.
The idea is to give businesses more choice without requiring Kia to develop an entirely separate vehicle for every application.

When will the Kia PV7 be available in the UK?
